Christ the King Cathedral School
Celebrates Fifty Years of Excellence in Education
Over fifty years ago, a group of forward-thinking people dreamed of a new Catholic parish and school for Lubbock. This dream became a reality in 1957 when the doors of Christ the King School opened. Built in the middle of what was then cotton fields in southwest Lubbock, the school started with 1st through 3rd grades and grew to the school it is today serving Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students.
In celebration of the first fifty years of the school’s existence, a sell-out crowd of school supporters joined together on September 15th for Christ the King Cathedral School’s 50th Anniversary Gala. The day’s events kicked off with an art show and sale featuring 15 local artists as well as Christ the King student artists that was open to the public during the afternoon. The Gala in the evening included a continuation of the art show and sale, an exquisitely catered dinner, and a special concert by CTK alumnus & Broadway star, David Gaschen. Event sponsors were treated to a special preview party that included a meet & greet with David Gaschen prior to the main Gala events.
Gaschen performed many Phantom of the Opera ballads that local audiences always look forward to as well as newer material, even surprising some by singing a Garth Brooks’ classic. The night wrapped up with a quick auction of a private Gaschen concert with proceeds benefiting the school.
Special guests for the evening included Sr. Kit Gray and Sr. Martha Schwertner representing the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange who were the original teachers at the school from its beginning until the early 1970s. Other guests included Bishop Placido Rodriguez, Monsignor Ben Kasteel, Monsignor Gene Driscoll, and Superintendent of Diocesan Schools, Deacon Leo Cottenoir and his wife, Marla.
